![]() ![]() ![]() During this time it was publishing a few of the greatest comic series of all time, including Preacher, Transmetropolitan, Lucifer, Fables and Y: The Last Man, which elevated the imprints’ relevance. Vertigo remained a strong comics imprint throughout the late ‘90s and early 2000s. In 1993, Vertigo was launched, continuing the six titles in “The Bergerverse” and adding new titles every month to the imprint. ![]() Fan press dubbed this line of books “The Bergerverse” and eventually DC followed suit, placing these books under a separate imprint, known as Vertigo. All of the books sported a label on the cover stating “Suggested for Mature Readers”. Berger worked with these writers (and others) on the books Animal Man, Doom Patrol, Sandman, Hellblazer, The Saga of the Swamp Thing and Shade, the Changing Man. This sudden addition of a number of British writers working on American comic books went from being an experiment to being a full-blown success. She was impressed by the edgy point of view they brought to the books and hoped their addition to the DC comics would be a refreshing change. Throughout the ‘80s she began recruiting writers from the UK, including Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Jamie Delano and Peter Milligan. In 1979, Karen Berger joined DC Comics as an assistant editor. ![]()
